The next month 3 of her downline go out and sign up just 2 people each. 3 purchase just the basic product, and the other 3 purchase both the basic and the VIP products.

So now Mary earns 50% commissions on her 10 direct referrals for a total of $367.25.

But she also earns a 50% matching bonus on their earnings. She earns an additional $74.85 from the 6 members they signed up who purchased the basic product. Plus an additional $145.50 from the 3 members they signed up who purchased the VIP product. So Mary’s total earnings the second month would be $587.60.

And that’s using pretty conservative numbers.

Again, I don’t know how hard you will work to achieve your goals, so no income levels can ever be guaranteed. But as Joel likes to say, your only real task is to drive traffic to your Pure Leverage sales funnel, and the system takes care of the rest.

It’s bad enough what the shutdown of Zeek Rewards did to the image of network marketing. But now we have another problem on our hands.

There are companies out there, some of them quite large, that are actively promoting to former Zeek affiliates. They have actually created landing pages designed specifically for Zeek affiliates, and are offering special incentives to join, such as free memberships or free placements in their organization depending on how high up they were in Zeek Rewards.

Some have argued that this is a good thing because it’s people in the industry trying to reach out and help other people in the industry who have been hurt by Zeek.

I would beg to differ.

These are vultures trying to prey on the “victims” of a massive ponzi scheme, perhaps the largest in history! I put “victims” in quotes because I don’t want to entirely remove responsibility of one doing their own due diligence and knowing what they are getting involved with when they invest in a business, whether it be investing with time and/or money.

There were plenty of “red flags” out there that Zeek Rewards was a troubled business model if people would have taken the time and effort to examine all the information available online, from resources like “BehindMLM” or “PatrickPretty“.

But regardless, many Zeek Rewards affiliates are hurting today. And many of them are vulnerable to these Reload Scams.

Don’t Fall Victim to Reload Scams

The Department of Justice has released a statement urging people not to fall victim to Reload Scams.

This is good advice.

I’ve heard some people say they will NEVER get involved in internet marketing again. I’ve heard others say they need to find another opportunity to replace the income they have lost with Zeek Rewards.

Both sentiments are wrong in my opinion.

While I certainly empathize with those who say they never want to be involved in internet marketing again, one shouldn’t throw the baby out with the bath water.

There is no better place to create multiple income streams to supplement or replace your current income than online. Where else can one start a business using minimal funds and then build that business over time so that they are earning substantial income?

You can’t do that with a traditional “brick and mortar” business.

And notice that I didn’t say that starting and building an online business was easy, or that earning a substantial income would happen overnight.

Anyone who has been in internet marketing for any length of time will tell you that’s not easy and achieving success takes time.

On the other hand, Zeek affiliates need to take a deep breath, take a step back, and maybe remove themselves from the online stage for awhile. Some affiliates were earning quite a substantial amount from Zeek, and are now in panic mode because that source of income has disappeared. It’s tempting to want to jump back into another business quickly in order to try to replace that missing income. There are several businesses still in existence that very much resemble the Zeek business model (one has already changed their business model overnight after what occurred to Zeek). Don’t be lured by temptation.

A Final Thought on Reload Scams

To those companies and affiliates that are specifically targeting Zeek Rewards affiliates…

SHAME ON YOU!

Reload Scams like you are what give this business a bad name and cause people to bad mouth internet marketing in general, and more specifically network marketing, and multi-level marketing companies.

You’ve let your greed overcome your decency.

You’ve let dollar signs trump character.

There’s an old saying in this business…

Help people get what they want out of life, and you will get what you want out of life.

And what people who have been hurt by Zeek Rewards, or other businesses out there, need right now is empathy, compassion, and understanding.

They just need a listening ear.

And NOT a SALES PITCH!

The shutdown of Zeek Rewards is just another black eye for our industry. But these reload scams are not doing anything to let it heal.

So if you’re a part of this internet marketing community that we belong to then speak up. It’s up to us to clean this mess up and try to restore some sense of reliability and trust to our profession.

I’ve been busy over the last few days answering phone calls and emails from people who wondered what my thoughts were about what has happened with the SEC shutting down Zeek Rewards.

Some of them are angry, upset, and apprehensive about what will happen to all the money they put into the business.

All I can do is tell them that they probably know as much about that as I do and point them to available resources online.

Since the SEC moved quickly and shut down Zeek before it totally collapsed, there seems a good possibility that many affiliates will get back at least a portion of what they put in. There is also the possibility that people who made substantial profits in Zeek Rewards will have to pay back their earnings (called “clawbacks”), but all of those decisions are yet to be determined.

Some of the people who have contacted me already knew my feelings about Zeek Rewards because we had discussed the business in private. I always told people who asked me my thoughts that in my personal opinion, Zeek Rewards was a ponzi scheme and wouldn’t last, but that they needed to do their own due diligence and make up their own minds. I also told them that I had quit promoting Zeek, after initially joining back in January of this year (2012) at the recommendation of a friend who actually paid my way into the business to start.

Others who have contacted me seemed surprised at my views because they “assumed” I was heavily involved in Zeek Rewards. This was likely due to the fact that I have a lot of associations in the network marketing world, and many of them were actively and visibly promoting Zeek Rewards. And while I usually do see what my associates and friends are doing in the network marketing world and often follow their lead, I don’t do it on every occasion.

Lesson 1 from Zeek Rewards:

** EVERYONE is RESPONSIBLE for their OWN actions in this business!

I’ve had people want to blame this “leader” or that “leader” in the internet marketing realm for getting them involved in Zeek. But like a lot of people in the world today, there seems to be a tendency to try to blame somebody or something else for their woes.

Don’t get me wrong.

I’m not entirely thrilled with supposed “leaders” in this business who seemed to look the other way with the all the “red flags” that cropped up frequently regarding Zeek Rewards, or people who were cheerleading Zeek Rewards when they were supposed to be acting like a watchdog over the MLM industry. I believe their credibility has taken a hit, and rightfully so.

I also appreciate the real “leaders” in the industry who provided their followers both sides of the story so that all the relevant information was available so people could make their own decisions.

But the bottom line is that anybody that gets in this business of internet marketing must claim ownership of their own decisions. It is their business after all. To try to blame somebody else is just a cop out.

Lesson 2 of Zeek Rewards

** Friends are Friends but Business is Business!

If you really want to be successful online, or offline for that matter, then you need to be able to separate your friendships from your business. That doesn’t mean that the two never mix. But it does mean that if your friendship gets in the way of your principles, then it’s best if you choose your principles. That’s often a tough thing to do. I now know from personal experience with Zeek Rewards. Many of my friendships were strained after I jumped off the Zeek Rewards bandwagon. In fact, I had one friend email me one night berating me because I had dared to talk negatively about Zeek Rewards to one of her downline. And she threatened to contact Zeek Rewards and “report me”. I promptly emailed her back and told her that her downline had asked my honest opinion about Zeek Rewards and I gave it. And if she wanted to report me to Zeek Rewards, then she had my permission. I haven’t spoken with her since, so I’m not sure how she feels today.

Lesson 3 of Zeek Rewards

** Remember the Rules of Business

The old saying “If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is” is just as relevant today as in the past.

Zeek Rewards promised outlandish returns and anyone, if they just did basic math, could have determined for themselves that Zeek Rewards couldn’t last.

Add in the fact that very little work had to be done to get paid on a daily basis, and you had a recipe for disaster.

There are a couple of good rules to remember when choosing a business opportunity.

1. You must be willing to work hard to build your business.
2. There must be a valid product or service being offered in exchange for compensation.
3. You must provide unique value to the customer.
4. The company must have ethical business practices.

I guess the most disappointing thing I have heard from a lot of people in the aftermath of Zeek Rewards is that they are done with online marketing and MLM opportunities. This is understandable but so mistaken. There are so many good business opportunities available today, and the MLM structure is a powerful way to build an online income.

And as long as one follows the 4 basic rules listed above, they can find a business that appeals to them and will help them achieve success.

There are a lot of “vultures” out there right now, businesses that are trying to capitalize on the misfortune of people hurt by Zeek Rewards. The very fact that they would promote the way they are should tell you something about the company, their ethics, and their principles. It’s a shame because some of these companies might have a legitimate product or service to offer to the public. But I, for one, would not want to be associated with a company that does such things. So beware!

Hopefully, Zeek Rewards is a lesson for all of us and we can all learn from it and become better marketers because of it.

It’s funny really…

I had seen several emails that had rolled into my inbox about Lightyear Wireless before I actually had taken a look at the business. That happens quite often. I get so many offers about new businesses and products that sometimes I tune them out and don’t even give them a chance. And they may be perfectly good businesses.

I’m pretty sure that the reason I finally took a look at one of the Lightyear Wireless emails is because I own a cell phone. I mean, who doesn’t, right? There are actually more cell phones sold in the United States than there are people. So I knew that the cell phone business was HUGE and there was a lot of opportunity there.

In comparison, let’s briefly look at some other well-known network marketing businesses:

Nutritional: Only approximately 60% of the U.S. population takes vitamins every day. That means 40% of the population is not interested or will not buy products in the nutritional field.

Travel: Only approximately 40% of the U.S. population travels on a regular basis. That leaves 60% of the population who won’t be interested in the travel business or purchase travel related items.

However, everybody that I know has a cell phone, from children to adults. And people feel lost when they don’t have their cell phone. I mean, think about it… Have you ever left the house without your cell phone? What did you do?

So cellular is a tremendously popular product in high demand. And it’s only going to get bigger. Only 50% of U.S. cell phone users own a smartphone and that number is expected to increase significantly over the next few years. So the timing couldn’t be better to get into the wireless industry.

I could get the exact same service with Lightyear Wireless for just $59.99 a month. But I had to buy a phone from Lightyear, just like anyone does when they switch carriers. Usually, the other carriers will subsidize the purchase of your phone so you might get a phone for free, or at a discounted price. I had the pleasure of meeting Jean Shaw in San Antonio when Tissa Godavitarne and myself attended the GVO Seminar back in 2010. She asked if she could interview me after we returned home about my experiences with my online success and although I was honored that she even considered me, I was somewhat surprised. There were a lot of “big time” internet marketers there in San Antonio. A LOT more successful than me! But I guess that was the point.

Jean didn’t necessarily want to talk with just the big guys, but wanted to discuss how a regular “Joe” like me started out and perhaps give some insights to my internet journey.

The truth is I’m no Tissa Godavitarne, Joel Therien, or Frank Sousa.

At least not yet!

It truly is a journey, a process, a step-by-step adventure to online success.

What Is Online Success?

Of course “online success’ is determined by every individual and what goals they set for themselves. It isn’t always defined by money. For instance, someone could have a message they want to get out there to the public, and online success could be determined by how many subscribers they get to their blog. A non-profit organization or a church could define online success by how many people they get to show up at an event. Or a politician by how many voters show up at a town hall meeting.

Setting Your Goals for Online Success

In the interview, we talk about setting goals and taking baby steps to reach them. If you are trying to earn your first dollar online, then set that as your goal. And work hard to achieve it. Then set your goal at $25, then $100.

One of my favorite techniques is to ask people to visualize themselves earning enough money each month to pay a bill and see themselves paying it with the money they’ve earned online, whether it’s the electric bill, a car payment, or the rent or mortgage payment.

We also discussed briefly the influences I had in my life when I grew up and there is no doubt that “Think and Grow Rich” by Napoleon Hill was a big factor in determining who I am today. And I recall him talking about visualizing your success, because a thought is a thing. And if you give your mind a concrete thing to ponder it will seek out ways, even in your sleep, for you to achieve it. “Believe it, and you can achieve it”.

That’s why setting a definite goal is so important.

Just saying to yourself “I want to make a bunch of money”, for example, is not enough of a concrete goal for your mind to grasp and act upon. It’s too broad. Too undefined.

But if you tell it, “I want to make enough each month to pay my car payment”, then it has something it can wrap it’s brain cells around and act on to achieve positive results.

Your mind will then begin to produce various ideas for you to reach your goal, and then it’s up to YOU to act upon those ideas.

Unfortunately, that is where most people FAIL. Instead of acting on their ideas, they sit back just hoping that their ideas will come to fruition without hard work. It isn’t going to happen.

Online success doesn’t just happen by accident. It takes a plan, hard work, and persistence. And the only people who fail are the ones who quit.
